Summary of Bringing Up Bébé

4.7 . 4487 reviews

Short summary

American bestselling author and journalist Pamela Druckerman was going to deliver her baby in Paris, and as most expecting mothers do, she started searching for resources to help make sense of pregnancy and childrearing. That's when she discovered the stunning difference in how Americans and Francophones handle pregnancy. She also started noticing that French children behaved in certain ways that were different from Americans. Pamela decided to research more into French parenting philosophy. The wealth of information she discovered made it selfish to keep it all to herself. So she penned it all down in Bringing Up Bébé. The book quickly became an international bestseller and has been translated into over 30 languages. This summary will arm you with the following tidbits you need to become the parent your child needs you to be: You don't have to gain weight when pregnant. Learn how to make two- to four-month-olds sleep through the night by themselves. Discover how to get your baby to eat well, and much more. “When I ask French parents what they most want for their children, they say things like “to feel comfortable in their own skin” and “to find their path in the world.” They want their kids to develop their own tastes and opinions.” ~ Pamela Druckerman

Americans struggle with parenting, unlike the French, because of their psychoanalyzed believes and overprotectiveness

After Pamela Druckerman lost her journalism job in the United States, she moved to France with her boyfriend – now husband.

In France, she learned how to raise her child with ease like a French parent.

When Pamela discovered she was pregnant, she started observing French children and how pregnant French women behave. She saw that the French families all around her don’t look like they’re in hell. Weirdly, they looked like they’re on vacation. She realized that French parents are achieving outcomes that create a whole different atmosphere for family life, unlike American families who spend much of their time refereeing their children or helping their toddlers do laps around the kitchen island.

Part of the French parents' strategy is not panicking or being overprotective. They care about their children. They know and protect their children from pedophiles, allergies, and choking hazards. They take reasonable precautions. But they never panic about their children’s health and overall well-being.

Their calm outlook makes French parents better at creating boundaries and giving their children autonomy.
According to hundreds of books and articles, the average middle-class American has a parenting problem.
The American parenting problem can be defined as paying more attention to the upbringing of children than can be good for them.

The tiring, relentless, and unhappy pace of American parenting is a turnoff for everyone, even parents themselves.

Part of this is because of the propagated belief that children are psychologically weak or fragile. Today’s young parents can be described as a huge part of the most psychoanalyzed generation ever; they have believed the idea that every choice they make could damage their children. All this brings about a parenting style that’s stressful and exhausting. But in France, Pamela saw something better — that you don't have to stress yourself to death to raise good children. Parenting can be a sweet experience, and this summary will show you how.

In the following chapters, you'll learn what French women do to remain healthy during pregnancy, how to make your baby sleep through the night, how to train them without having to be extra strict, and much more.
second key point

Parenting is not an excuse for stressing yourself out

The history of violent crime committed in the U.S. can be linked to the parenting mistakes Americans make today. The fact that the media is filled with crime reports on a daily basis doesn't help much. People are scared that something evil might happen to their children if they become careless. This line of thought makes parents overprotective and insecure.

Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
