Short summary
Changing your behavior can be very demanding and extremely uncomfortable because of the mental strength required. The process of getting rid of a behavior we are used to can become difficult, especially if we don’t know how to go about it. In most cases, the problem with change is the result of our lack of knowledge of how to go about it. This is why we are saddled with questions on how to change something we are used to and learn new things that are strange to us.
The author, Karen Pryor, is a writer and a behavioral biologist. She was a founder and pioneer dolphin trainer at Hawaii’s Sea Life Park. She has an international reputation as a scientist in both behavioral psychology and marine mammal biology.
“When you stop relying on aversive controls such as threats, intimidation, and punishment, and when you know how to use reinforcement to get not just the same but better results, your perception of the world undergoes a shift.” ~ Karen Pryor
One of the worst ways of getting rid of unwanted behavior is through punishment

Punishment is still one of humanity's most popular strategies for eradicating undesirable behavior. It has a negligible effect on the subject's behavior. When a subject makes a mistake and is penalized, it does not imply that the activity will end or that a better solution will emerge. Usually, when one degree of punishment fails to work, a greater level of punishment is employed, which almost always has negative consequences.
When punishment is administered after an undesired conduct has occurred, and over a lengthy period of time, it may not always succeed. As a result, the subject may not be able to link the punishment to his or her past actions; animals rarely learn from punishment, and humans often fail to do so either.
Doing the wrong thing over and over again only wastes time and produces negative results.
Reinforcement, which is the continuous practice of a behavior, whether negative or positive, is the most effective method to alter or eliminate undesirable behavior. If we really want to make a good change, however, we must embrace some methods like reinforcement, clicker training, rewards, etc, that are employed to promote positive change.
Fear is the enemy of learning. It’s the negator of joy, the preventer of play, the inhibitor of trust and love. Fear just gets in the way, slows things down, and causes unnecessary pain. ~ Karen Pryor
Karen Pryor has effectively produced one of the books that will stand the test of time in a way that only specialists can. She was able to create a workable approach and technique for changing our behavior or teaching others how to alter theirs by teaching us how to train a dog.
In this summary, you will learn how to train animals, and how to apply some of the training methods mentioned here to yourself and your environment. Continue reading to learn more about how to utilize positive and negative reinforcements to accomplish your goals.
second key point
A reinforcer serves as a trigger that initiates behavioral changes in animals and humans
To understand the concept of encouraging good behavior, it's important to know about behavioral reinforcements. These are continuous practices that make a habit or behavior become part of you.
In this insightful book, the author explores the revolutionary techniques of teaching and training using positive reinforcement. With a focus on animal behavior, Karen Pryor presents a comprehensive guide that can be applied to various aspects of life, from training pets to improving relationships. Through engaging anecdotes and practical advice, she emphasizes the power of positive reinforcement in shaping behavior and achieving desired outcomes, making this book a valuable resource for both animal trainers and individuals seeking effective teaching methods.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
