Summary of Limitless Mind

4.7 . 684 reviews

Short summary

“Limitless Mind” by Jo Boaler presents the idea that brains are not fixed from birth. Boaler shares research and studies that back up this message, as well as how this can help us move from the fixed brain mindset to the brain growth mindset as learners. Dr. Jo Boaler is a professor of mathematics at Stanford University and the faculty director of Youcubed — an educational resource that has reached over 230 million students. This summary will share evidence that our brains — and our lives — are highly adaptable, and that when people fully embrace this knowledge and change their approach to their lives and their learning, incredible outcomes result.

When we realize our potential, we unlock parts of ourselves that have been held back and start to live without limiting beliefs

We will turn challenges we face in life into achievements. Learning the new science in this book and the 6 keys of learning will change how our brains function. Learning helps us to develop new pathways in our brains. The 6 beliefs prove that reality is truly negotiable because they change your beliefs about reality and also change your reality.

Most people believe that there is a limit to what they can achieve. Such belief is both incorrect and damaging. What’s correct is that we can all learn anything. We can change our expertise and develop in new directions. Our brains can change and we can change our approach to learning to achieve extraordinary results.

When people start to struggle with math, they decide that they don’t have the brain for the work and give up. When someone struggles with writing, they decide that the humanities are not for them and they give up. Children who started school with excitement eventually become disillusioned when they get the idea that they are not as smart as their colleagues. Educational institutions, parents and other people around them have inadvertently sent these incorrect messages. What we need to do to dispel these damaging myths is to develop a different approach to life and learning.

Teachers, leaders, and learners need to explore the extent of new possibilities created by this new information about learning. The idea that our abilities are fixed is mainly the reason there is a math anxiety in the US and the world. Therefore, any struggle is generally perceived as inadequacy.
Research shows that activating the fear center in our brain diminishes the problem-solving centers of the brain.
The 6 keys of learning shared in this book not only create opportunities for people to excel in the learning of different subjects but also empower them to approach life in a different way.

Did you know? Approximately 50% of students taking introductory math courses in college suffer from math anxiety according to one study.
We are not born with fixed abilities, and those who achieve at the highest levels do not do so because of their genetics. ~ Jo Boaler

The limits of our brains are the limits we impose on them by our beliefs and myths

Research on brain plasticity reveals that every time we learn something, our brains change and reorganize. Neuroplasticity was originally discovered several decades ago but the implications are yet to be implemented in schools, boardrooms, and homes. Anders Ericsson, a Swedish-born psychologist, first became aware of the brain’s incredible ability to grow and change from an experiment he tried with a young athlete named Steve. The experiment involved testing the ability to memorize. Steve started with an average ability to memorize just 7 numbers and then he improved to about 9 numbers in the following 4 days. Thinking they had reached Steve’s limit; they were surprised to find that he was able to memorize 10 numbers. There was a steady increase until Steve could memorize and recall a string of 82 random digits.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
