Short summary

For a long time, people have generally assumed that a person’s potential in any given field is inevitably and unavoidably limited by that person’s inherent talent. There always seem to be a few exceptional people who dazzle everyone with what they can do and how well they do it. When confronted with such an exceptional person, many people naturally tend to conclude that they were born with something a little extra. For more than thirty years, Anders Ericsson studied these people, the special ones who stand out as experts in their fields — athletes, musicians, chess players, doctors, salespeople, teachers, and more. He observed, interviewed, and tested them. He also explored the psychology, physiology, and neuroanatomy of these extraordinary people. And over time, he discovered that these people do have an extraordinary gift, which lies at the heart of their capabilities. But it is not the gift that people usually assume it to be, and it is even more powerful than anyone imagines. Most importantly, it is a gift that everyone is born with and can, with the right approach, take advantage of. This summary describes what that “right sort of practice” is and how it can be put to work. It explains how you can improve in an area you choose. Anders Ericsson, Ph.D., is a Conradi Eminent Scholar and professor of psychology at Florida State University. In collaboration with Robert Pool, a science writer who has worked at Science and Nature, they offer a roadmap for becoming the best in your field and share surefire steps for remaining so throughout life. “In this new world, it no longer makes sense to think of people as born with fixed reserves of potential; instead, the potential is an expandable vessel, shaped by the various things we do throughout our lives.” ~ Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool

Success is not a game of chance; to get to the peak of your career, you need to be deliberate about your growth

Over the years, people have tried to discover the secrets behind exceptional talent. What made Mozart or Leonardo Da Vinci so great? How come some people are better at playing chess than others? And many times, in a bid to answer these questions, it’s easier just to say that genes are responsible for their achievements.

Yes, in some cases, genetic endowment makes a difference, particularly in areas where height or other physical factors are essential. But, the brain is adaptable, and training can create skills that did not exist before. So, learning now becomes a way of creating abilities. It isn’t just a way of reaching one’s potential but rather, a way of developing it.

The right sort of practice carried out over a sufficient period leads to improvement. This summary describes, in detail, what that “right sort of practice” is and how it can be put to work. The information on this sort of practice is drawn from a relatively new area of psychology that can be best described as “the science of expertise.”
“Deliberate practice was developed specifically to help people become among the best in the world at what they do and not merely to become ‘good enough,’ it is the most powerful approach to learning that has yet been discovered.” ~ Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool
More than two decades ago, after studying expert performers from a wide range of fields, Ericsson and his colleagues realized that no matter what the field, the most effective approaches to improving performance all follow a single set of general principles. This universal approach is known as “deliberate practice.” Today the deliberate practice remains the standard for anyone in any field who wishes to take advantage of the gift of adaptability to build new skills and abilities.

So, if you are interested in becoming better in anything you do, and looking to improve your life generally, this is your manual to a better experience. Keep reading to find out how you can be the best in your field, and achieve your goals.
second key point

Purposeful practice is powerful enough to keep you focused on your goals until you achieve them

In the late 1970s, Ericsson conducted an experiment with Steve Faloon, an undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon University. It involved memorizing strings of numbers. In the early sessions, he could only remember 7 or 8 digits. But the goal was to see how much Faloon could improve with practice. By the sixtieth session with Faloon, he was able to remember twenty digits, and after about 200 sessions, he had reached 82 digits.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
