Short summary
In “The Art of Gathering,” Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives don't have to be as lackluster and unproductive as we make them. When we bring people together, we concentrate on routines and conventions of gathering, rather than focus on distinctiveness and the people involved.
In our society today, gathering is more important than ever. If we can understand why these gatherings are memorable, we can reframe and redirect them to benefit both the guests and the host.
Priya Parker gives a human-centered approach to gathering to help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play. Drawing on years of experience facilitating high-powered gatherings all over the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to give us an insight into what works, what doesn’t, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings from conferences to meetings to flash-mob parties and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience.
As crucial as gathering is to us as humans, we rarely make an effort to do it right

Gathering, according to Priya Parker, is the deliberate bringing together of people for a particular purpose. As humans, gathering, especially how we do it, matters a lot. It helps determine the kind of world we live in and shapes the way we think, feel, and make sense of our world.
All over the world, governments understand the tremendous power in gathering. In democracies, the freedom to assemble is one of the fundamental human rights. In authoritarian societies, the first thing to get taken away from the masses is the right to assemble. The reason for this is that revolutions are often birthed when people come together, exchange information, and inspire one another.
And yet, as powerful as gathering can be, the majority of us spend very little time thinking about the actual ways in which we assemble. We spend our lives gathering — first in our families, then in neighborhoods and playgroups, schools and churches, and then in meetings, parties, conferences, class and family reunions, etc. And we spend much of that time in bland, underwhelming moments that don't change us in any way, or connect us to one another.
Studies have shown that much of the time we spend in gatherings with other people disappoint us. For instance, the State of Enterprise Work survey found in 2015 that employees’ top obstacles to getting work done were “wasteful meetings.” Likewise, in 2016, Duncan Green, a specialist in international development confessed in an article in the Guardian: “With the occasional exception, my mood in conferences usually swings between boredom, despair, and rage.”
However, as much as our gatherings disappoint us, we often keep gathering in the same tired ways. When we bring people together, we remain on autopilot, following stale formulas, hoping that the chemistry of a good meeting, conference, or party will somehow take care of itself. We expect that the same old inputs will magically yield thrilling results. It’s almost always a vain hope.
Fortunately, anyone can gather well. You don’t need to be an extrovert or have a fancy house or title.
There are simple yet powerful guidelines for organizing effective and memorable gatherings. You'll learn about them all in this summary.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
