Summary of The Gift

4.8 . 4612 reviews

Short summary

Some people in life make you stop, listen, and really pay attention to everything they say. Dr. Edith Eva Eger is one of those people. Dr. Eger was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, and having watched her mother and father taken away to die, not only did she survive, but she has since dedicated her life to helping others. Labelling Eger as an “inspiration” doesn’t do her justice. The New York Times bestselling author and psychologist has plenty of advice for anyone who wants to free themselves from the chains of the past and move forwards to a brighter, more hopeful future.

“The Gift” teaches us that through adversity, we find our greatest strength and knowledge

Listen the first key point

Before you start reading a “how-to” book packed with information on how you should live your life, you want to know that the person you’re taking that advice from knows what they’re talking about. In this case, the person giving you the advice is more than qualified.

Dr. Edith Eva Eger hails from Kassa in Hungary, and in 1944, she found herself bundled into a vehicle, along with the rest of her family, and taken to Auschwitz. That day, her mother and father were taken to the gas chamber and murdered. Eger and her sister faced extreme desperation, pressure, and sadness in their time in Auschwitz, living under the constant fear of torture and death.
Each moment in Auschwitz was hell on earth. It was also my best classroom. ~ Dr. Edith Eva Eger
For the observer looking in, it’s extremely difficult to understand how Dr. Eger has managed to hold her positive attitude throughout life. However, she clearly states that the time she spent in Auschwitz gave her the strength and preparation to deal with whatever life had to throw at her. It also gave her the tools to help other people from all walks of life, including those who have survived wars, sexual assaults, and addiction.
Difficult situations in life teach us about mental strength, overcoming adversity, and kindness in even the darkest of times. Listening to these lessons will set you free.
Most of us spend our lives dealing with past problems, memories that we’d rather forget, fears that hold us back, and even debilitating worries about what might come in the future. Eger is very clear on one thing — you put yourself in your own mental prison, and no one else can do it for you, not even the Nazis.

Through our common mistakes in life, we keep ourselves imprisoned. Learning to free yourself means having the courage to take a long, hard look at yourself, including how you think, act, and work to make changes.

“The Gift” teaches you that although some things in life may be difficult to handle, they’re sent to teach you lessons and make you stronger if you allow yourself to see things positively.

Did you know? 1.1 million people died in Auschwitz during World War II.
second key point

You can choose to be a victim or a survivor

Whenever something happens in life, it’s very easy to wonder why it had to happen to you. By asking yourself that question, you’re allowing yourself to remain a victim. You’re stuck in the past, static, and not moving forward.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
