Short summary
Have you ever wondered why some businesses succeed and others fall by the wayside? This doesn’t come down to luck or a huge cash injection, it comes down to making firm decisions and creating momentum!
Whether you’re trying to kickstart a business or organize a fundraising event, you can use the power of the flywheel to help you build momentum and create success.
The hugely popular monograph to accompany “Good to Great”, “Turning the Flywheel” will show you just how easy it can be to take your idea and push it toward the greatest heights of future success!
Have you ever wondered why some businesses flourish and grow in success year upon year and others simply struggle all the way and eventually fail? It’s not always about the most complicated aspects of their business plan, and it’s often that they haven’t considered the basics with enough detail or thought.
Back in 2001, Amazon asked Jim Collins to discuss with them his flywheel concept which was first introduced in “Good to Great”. This was in the middle of a difficult time for Internet businesses, and Amazon wanted to ensure that they could continue to build their brand and survive what was a turbulent economy. This was a very successful approach!
If you want your business to succeed and grow, you need to ensure that you build it on a strong foundation. Focus on planning and making solid decisions from the get-go.
The flywheel effect shows that you don’t need a lucky break, you don’t need to find a four-leafed clover or a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Instead, it comes down to planning, creating the elements required to get things started, and then building momentum. Consider all of this as a huge wheel, a flywheel.
A flywheel is a circle of important aspects that build upon each other to create success. For instance, if you wanted to make breakfast, you would first preheat your stove, you would get your pan out of the cupboard, you would add oil to the pan, you would take the egg from the fridge, you would crack the egg, and you would wait for the egg to cook before serving.
These are the actions to create a successful breakfast, with one action building upon the one which comes directly before it. As you reach the end of the circle, you’re back at the beginning, so you can begin the next morning’s breakfast!
In order for a flywheel to be successful, it needs to link back on each point before it. For instance, to make toast, you put the bread into the toaster, program the toaster, wait, remove it, add the butter. Every action adds value to the one before it.
Consider your business idea the same as this very simple example.
second key point
Turn your flywheel to create momentum
Creating success isn’t just about deciding upon the actions to put into your flywheel, but about turning the wheel. Because you’re starting from a static position, when you first try to turn the wheel it will be difficult. You need to try and put all your strength into getting it moving. However, as the wheel begins to turn slowly, the process of moving it becomes a little easier, and then even easier still.
"Turning the Flywheel" by Jim Collins is a concise and insightful monograph that serves as a companion to his renowned book "Good to Great." In this book, Collins delves into the concept of the flywheel, a powerful metaphor for sustained success in organizations. Through real-world examples and practical advice, he explores how to build momentum, harness the flywheel effect, and achieve long-term greatness in business.
Who should read Turning the Flywheel
Business leaders seeking to understand the key principles of sustained success.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
